Voices United: A Space for Connection, Healing, and Collective Power

Voices United is a community-rooted initiative to uplift the lived experiences of African Americans with visible and invisible disabilities. This program is built on the belief that wellness begins with community, and community begins with listening.

Built by Community, For Community

The Voices United initiative focuses on supporting African American individuals who live with physical, intellectual, developmental, and mental health disabilities. Participants are invited into intentional environments where lived experience is honored, historical and generational trauma is acknowledged, and resilience is celebrated.

Each gathering is designed with care. Events are led by facilitators and elders from within the community who understand the importance of culturally responsive engagement. From mental health education to dance, meditation to shared meals, every session centers the collective wellness of the Black disabled community.

Participants gather in a well-lit studio with open garage-style doors, painting landscapes at individual easels.

Affinity Groups That Hold Hold Space and Build Trust

At the heart of Voices United are affinity-based circles—smaller groups that bring people together based on shared identities and lived experience. These groups offer intentional space for deeper dialogue, meaningful connection, and peer support.

Melanated & Mature

Mature in Age & Wisdom, African American and/or adults of African descent gather to reflect, laugh, and care for themselves and one another. Workshops focus on wellness planning, debunking mental health myths, healthy aging, and joyful events like Bunco Game Day, where food, fun, and shared stories restore the spirit.

Let’s Talk Black Men

This group creates a healing space for African American men and/or adult men of African descent to explore mental health, historical trauma, and wellness practices. Sessions include peer conversations, education about stress, PTSD, and depression, as well as group meditations grounded in community wisdom.

We See You Sis!

African American women and/or adult women of African descent to women gather in circles to explore mindfulness, stillness, and sisterhood. Sessions often feature guest facilitators, who lead participants in breathwork, self-care planning, and building professional networks grounded in wellness and trust.

Community Happy Hour

Community Happy Hour is an ongoing gathering space rooted in joy, visibility, and authentic connection. Hosted at local venues, these events offer an open invitation to professionals, newcomers, creatives, and community leaders to come together; no agenda, just shared space.

From Connection to Collective Care

Voices United is not a service. It is a circle. It is a space to be witnessed, to build with others, and to lay down what is heavy. Our participants report that through this initiative, they have:

Three men sit on a stage in front of framed images of Black musicians and cultural leaders. One man speaks into a microphone while others listen and hold papers.

Join the Circle, Start the Conversation.

If you or someone you support identifies as African American and/or African descent and is living with a disability, there is space for you in Voices United. This is a home for your voice, your experiences, your healing, and your joy.
